32 Types of Hidden Sugar In Packaged Food


Sugar is added to most packaged food.  Learning the various names for natural, processed sugars, will help you know what to look for when you read food labels. The list identifies natural sugars. Natural sugars  are derived from food, rather than chemicals.


Agave Syrup, Beet Sugar, Brown Rice Syrup, Brown Sugar, Cane Juice, Confectioner’s Sugar, Coconut Sugar, Corn Syrup, Corn Syrup Solids, Date Sugar, Dextrose, Dehydrated Cane Juice, Evaporated Cane Juice, Fruit Juice Concentrate, Fructose, Honey, Lactose, Malted Barley Syrup, Maltose Syrup, Maple Syrup, Molasses, Palm Sugar, Raw Honey, Sorbitol, Sorghum Syrup, Stevia, Sucrose, Succanat, Turbinado Sugar (aka Raw Sugar), Xylitol.

If you think that added natural sugar makes you  addicted, i.e., you can’t stop eating even if you’re full, then it might be a good idea to cut back, or cut out eating foods that contain added natural sugar.  Lowering or eliminating added  sugar reduces calories, and will you help you maintain a healthy weight.

Sugar Blues: Classic Hollywood Unmasks A Killer

Sugar Blues is a book written by William Dufty.  The book was released in 1975, and became a commercial success. The author argues that sugar is an unnatural, addictive drug that is harmful and damaging to human health.

Dufty was married to the late silent film star Gloria Swanson, a health crusading vegetarian and non-smoker.  She and Dufty went on tour promoting Sugar Blues during the late 70s. Read the rest of this entry

How To Spot Sugar In Packaged Food

Sugar is added to most packaged foods, and beverages.  If you want to avoid being overweight, then you have to pay attention to the amount of sugar in your food.  When you get into the habit of reading food labels, you’re going to discover that sugar is difficult to avoid.  “Sugar Shockers,” an article from WebMD, discusses food high in sugar.


Learning how to read food labels, will teach you which brands are packed with sweeteners.  Not all mustard contains added sugar.  The same goes for tomato sauce.  If you’re a vegetarian, sweeteners such as honey, or barley malt syrup, might be added  to non-meat packaged foods. I apologize if the photograph of glazed jelly donuts, made your mouth water.  To satisfy your sweet tooth, have an apple while you read this post.  A medium apple contains about 70 calories, and 4.0 grams of fiber.
