Tropical Smoothie Immune Booster

Something sweet and delicious can also be healthy.  The Mango, Orange, and Ginger Smoothie serves up a helping of antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory phytochemicals.

Plants produce these protective chemicals to protect themselves, and can also protect humans against diseases.  The recipe is from the NY Times.

Mangoes contain over 20 vitamins and minerals, fiber, Vitamin A and Vitamin C, antioxidants, potassium, calcium phosphorus, magnesium, iron and zinc.  There are 100 calories in one cup of mangoes.

Oranges are rich in fiber, pectin, high in Vitamin C, and Vitamin A, antioxidants, and phytonutrients. There are 62 calories in one orange.

Ginger is anti-inflammatory, helps digestion, provides anti-cancer benefits, and adds zest to your smoothie.

1 Cup Orange Juice
1/2 Large Ripe Mango
1 1/4 Teaspoons Ginger Juice*
4 Ice Cubes
1/2 Ripe Banana (optional)

Kitchen Tools: Blender, Grater, Cheesecloth

Combine orange, mango, and ginger juice and ice cubes in blender.  For a thicker drink, add the banana.  For best flavor, serve immediately.

*To make Ginger Juice grate 2 teaspoons ginger.  Place on cheesecloth.  Gather the edges of the cheesecloth.  Hold over a bowl, and twist to squeeze out the juice.  For more details on how to make Ginger Juice click here.
